The year is off to a great start for learners from Cwakeme High School, in Hluhluwe as the popular Swedish pop singer; Måns Zelmerlöw is set to visit the school on Friday, 14 February 2014.

His visit comes after the schools outstanding matric results for 2013. The school despite the outcry over the lack of basic teaching and learning resources managed to obtain 100 per cent pass rate in 2013. Last year the school excelled as they increased their matric results from 28 per cent in 2011 to 96 per cent in 2012 to 100 per cent in 2013.

Måns Zelmerlöw first visited the school in February 2013, when he performed at the launch of the Star For Life programme. He then became the sponsor of the SFL programme at the school, pledging to support excelling learners with university bursaries; he also sponsored the school with food for learners when they had extra lessons in the afternoon.

Star For Life provides it’s partnered schools with a Life Skills Coach, who provides counselling to the learners, conduct classroom sessions and one on one consultations with the learners and sometimes with the teachers. The SFL Life Skills Coach works closely with the Life Orientation educators, Lay Counsellors and Local Stakeholders.

According to the SFL Executive Director Dr Per Strand, “the SFL programme is effective because it generates incentives for learners to change behaviours that put their risk at health and undermine their schooling. The hard work that is done by SFL coaches and learners and teachers every day gets a little easier and a lot more fun with visits from music stars like Måns Zelmerlöw”.

Måns is also expected to perform at another Star For Life Launch on the same day at KwaGiba High School in Hluhluwe.
