Star For Life in partnership with Dr Reshma Sathiparsad from the school of Social work and community development at University of KwaZulu Natal  conducted a three day lay counseling workshop for teachers from uMkhanyakude and uThungulu District, the workshop was run from  the 4th to 6th of October 2012.

The purpose of the workshop was to provide the teachers with psycho social support skills as well as to enable them  to support their learners in schools on the challenges that they are facing on daily basis.

Nqobile Sithole and Mr Sifiso Mathenjwa.

Teachers also got the chance to share and discuss challenges they are facing on daily basis. Topics such as teenage pregnancy, HIV and Aids, youth development, parents separation, discipline and child headed house hold were discussed. One of the challenges that were raised by the teachers were the lack of Social Workers in their communities. “South Africa has a serious shortage of social workers and counselors, it's good that Star For Life is conducting these workshops”, said Mrs Mvubu from Khombindlela High School.

“Rural and township schools are largely neglected when it comes to psycho social support, and these schools are not well equipped with essential resources, so it is essential for the teachers to have background counseling”, said Dr Reshma.

Star For Life Lay counseling workshops are divided into three phases; basic, intermediate and the advance workshop. All the teachers received the advanced lay counseling certificate at the end of the workshop.
