The Star For Life Youth
Dialogue was held on the 10th of October at Nordale Community Hall
in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu Natal. The theme of
this years Youth Dialogue was; ‘My community, my future- inkunzi
isematholeni.’ Topics relating to
Education, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and crime were discussed. Three hundred learners from uMkhanyakude District
municipality and uMhlathuze local municipality attended the Youth Dialogue and
voiced their opinions and thoughts about issues affecting them in their schools
and their communities. The learners also
had an opportunity to interact with experts from several governments
departments and other relevant non-profit organisations. Both The Department of
Education, Health and Social Development, Justice and Constitutional Development
and SAPS were in attendance. An informative yet entertaining play by learners from Phumlani Primary School was performed at the symposium. Londekile Khuluse, a nine year old girl from Phumlani Primary school encouraged her peers to focus on their school work and to never give up on their dreams despite the challenges they may be facing. “You may have challenges today but they will not last forever, you have a responsibility to rise above the situation,” said Londekile. Phaphama Msomi, a Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund student ambassador from Sithengile High School confirmed that young people appreciate such symposiums and Youth Dialogues as they help prepare learners to be leaders in the future. “I really appreciate platforms like these where we as young people take more control of the dialogue, we now have the responsibility to go back to our communities and be the agents of change,” said Phaphama. The symposium also received outstanding response from the Mayor of Mtubatuba local municipality Cllr S.R Ntuli, who encouraged learners to focus on their studies. This symposium was made possible by the partnership between Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Star For Life. |
